How to add page numbers to a PDF

Page numbers are required in theses, tender documents and many official papers, and in long contracts they make it easier to refer to specific clauses. The page numbering tool adds numbers to the whole document or part of it, in the position and format you choose.

  1. Load the PDF

Drop the document in the box above.

  2. Choose the position

The number can go at the top or the bottom of the page – on the left, in the centre or on the right.

  3. Set the format and range

Choose e.g. “Page 1” or “Page 1 of 10”, the page range, the first number, the size, the margin and the colour.

  4. Download the PDF

The preview updates as you go, and the finished file is one click away.

Title page without a number

To skip the title page, set “From page” to 2. If the numbering should still start at 2, type 2 in the “First number” field.

A thesis step by step

  • combine the chapters into one file with the Merge PDF tool
  • add page numbers, skipping the title page
  • check the result before uploading the file to your university’s system

Frequently asked questions

Can I number only part of a document?

Yes. Set the “From page” and “To page” fields, and the other pages stay without numbers.

Will the number cover the content of the page?

The number is placed in the margin. If it overlaps the content, increase the margin or change the position.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes, type it in the “First number” field.
