How to split a PDF and extract selected pages
From a report of several dozen pages you need one table; from a contract, only the page with the signatures. Splitting a PDF lets you send exactly what is needed.
Why split a PDF
There are two main reasons. The first is privacy: there is no reason to send the whole contract when the recipient needs one page. The second is convenience: a smaller file is easier to send, and the recipient doesn’t have to look for the right place. Splitting is also useful when a document consists of several independent parts, such as invoices scanned together.
How to extract pages in PDFowo
- Open the Split PDF tool and add your file. You will see thumbnails of all the pages.
- Select the pages you want to keep.
- Download a new document containing only the selected pages.
Need every page as a separate file, or parts of a few pages each? Choose “Every page separately” or “Every few pages” at the top – you download all the files at once in a ZIP archive.
The file is processed locally, in your browser. The original stays unchanged on your drive, and the new file is created as a separate copy.
Splitting, deleting and reordering: how they differ
- Split PDF: you create a new document from selected pages. Good when you know which pages you are interested in.
- Delete pages: you keep most of the document and get rid of a few unnecessary sheets, e.g. blank pages after double-sided scanning.
- Reorder pages: you arrange the same pages differently when a scan came out in the wrong order.
- Extract images: you take the photos and graphics stored in the document out as separate files.
What to watch out for
Before sending part of a document, open the result and check that it really contains what you expect. Pay attention to the numbering: if you extract page 12, it will be page 1 in the new file, so references in the text (“see p. 14”) will no longer match. If the extract contains data you don’t want to reveal, consider redacting it in the editor as well.
Also remember that some documents have restrictions, e.g. no copying or editing. If you have the right to the file and know the password, you can remove them with the Unlock PDF tool before you start splitting.
Free, no sign-up. Your files stay on your device.
Open the Split PDF tool →Typical situations where splitting helps
The most common example is a contract from which only the signature page or the fee table is required. Another is a batch scan: the multifunction printer saved five invoices in one file, and each has to go to a different recipient. You select the pages of one invoice, download the file, then do the same with the next ones.
It is also worth splitting large documents into chapters when several people work on them, or when you want to send a part for review. Smaller files open faster and are easier to archive.
Frequently asked questions
Will the original file be changed?
