Pre-writing tracing patterns
Tracing patterns are simple shapes children follow with a pencil before they start writing letters. They build smooth hand movement, hand–eye coordination and a good pencil grip. Each row starts with a dark example followed by a light trail to trace.

How to practise
- start with the large size and easy shapes: waves and arches
- loops and squares are harder – they prepare for joined-up letters
- the red dot shows where to start; trace from left to right
- a few minutes a day is enough – smoothness matters more than speed
