How to protect a PDF with a password
A password on a PDF keeps the document away from people who shouldn’t see it – for example when you e-mail a contract, test results or HR documents. PDFowo encrypts the file with AES-256 and can also restrict printing, editing and copying.
- Load the document
Drop the PDF file in the box above.
- Set a password
Type the password and repeat it. It will be required every time the file is opened.
- Choose restrictions
Optionally block printing, editing or copying of the content.
- Download the protected file
Save a new, encrypted copy of the document.
How to choose a good password
- at least 12 characters, ideally a few random words
- don’t use your date of birth or an ID number
- send the password through a different channel than the file, e.g. by text message
Remember the password
A forgotten password cannot be recovered – AES-256 encryption is practically impossible to break. Keep an unprotected original in a safe place as well.
Frequently asked questions
Will a protected PDF open in any program?
Yes. AES-256 encryption is supported by popular PDF readers, including Adobe Acrobat Reader, web browsers and phone apps.
Are printing restrictions fully effective?
Most programs respect them, but they don’t replace an open password. A strong password is the most important protection.
How do I remove the password when I no longer need it?
Use the Unlock PDF tool and enter the password you know.
